Deane House Studios
Kentish Town, London

Client:
London Borough of Camden
Consultant:
Watts Group PLC
Service:
Project Management and Contract Administration
Project Cost:
£76,000

The project involved the construction of a new condenser plant platform at roof level to the rear of Deane House Studios. Watts was appointed to design new reinforced concrete piers supported on the load-bearing spine walls of the structure. Small steel piers were mechanically fixed to the new piers and a steel mesh walkway constructed to enable the plant to be placed directly onto the completed platform, without the need for secondary steel supports. The platform was provided with handrails and steps to provide a safe and accessible work area.

Watts’ brief was to design and install a condenser plant platform that would provide a safe area for commercial tenants of the building to install the plant. The platform was required as the roof top plant room walls were of insufficient strength to support other loads. Also, the client did not wish for items to be randomly installed over the building. The new platform was to provide a safe working space and contain all the plant in one localised area.

The lifting operation proved more difficult than originally anticipated due to the location of the building, therefore careful programming was required. This was doubly important due to the multiple occupancy of the building.
