The building was designed by the Camden Architects Department, and built between 1973 and 1977. The facia of the building is clad with concrete panels that had become heavily pollution-stained since the building was constructed. The objective of this fast-track project was to clean all elevations of the building and undertake other external fabric repairs and inspections. The deadlines included completing the front elevation in time for the high profile re-opening of the refurbished St Pancras Station, while working on an occupied building with public access, and over a busy thoroughfare.
Watts’ brief was to clean the elevations of the building to a high standard without using chemical or high-abrasive techniques, and in an environmentally sensitive fashion. Watts was instructed to minimise disruption to the building users and their activities, and to minimise impact on the general area, including the nearby RNIB. Watts undertook the project with a short lead-time and completed cleaning and striking scaffolding from elevations to a tight programme.
