Brighton & Fontwell Park Racecourses, Brighton

Client:
Northern Racing Limited
Consultant:
Watts
Service:
Environmental Audit

Watts was appointed to advise on accessibility issues at Brighton and Fontwell Park Racecourses in light of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, and the extra requirements coming into effect in October 2004. The client utilised the reports to assist in the development of their building management strategy and capital expenditure forecast, and to create a specification of upgrades and improvements, which they then sought to implement on a phased basis.

Watts carried out a detailed audit of the racecourses and gained an understanding of how the occupier interfaces with the public and other visitors. The racecourses already made certain provisions for disabled staff and visitors,
however, the client required Watts to identify the remaining accessibility problems and provide short-term and long- term solutions.

The racecourses contained many buildings, comprising bars, restaurants, grandstands, hospitality boxes, administration offices, car parking and toilet blocks. The Brighton site was often used for events such as exhibitions, private parties, meetings and training sessions. All these areas were assessed in terms
of their accessibility.
