Watts project managed the design and construction of student accommodation at the University of Essex, comprising 763 units, in eight blocks. The scope of works consisted of associated external works, infrastructure services, access roads, construction of a pedestrian bridge (over the adjacent railway), and remediation of the site. Construction by the main contractor, Bowmer and Kirkland, was undertaken using pre-cast concrete units and bathroom pods.

Value engineeringtook place prior to commencement of the works. The necessary planning changes were approved early on, and collateral warranties were required from the contractor, specialist subcontractors and consultants. All of the university's design requirements were approved and met. The accommodation includes three tutor units, a dean's flat and a student shop shell unit. The contract period was 88 weeks.

The completion of the pedestrian bridge to programme presented a challenge. Close liaison with Railtrack and the university, throughout its construction, ensured compliance with budget requirements and the DDA.
