The first edition of the Watts Pocket Handbook was published in 1983, and contained 62 pages. It was distributed to clients and staff, and the then Chairman of Watts described it as, "a collection of checklists and information in précis form to aid the practitioner". Even at that time, seven pages were devoted to the recognition and treatment of asbestos in buildings.
The original inspiration for the Watts Pocket Handbook came from a worn copy of the 1864 edition of the Hurst's 'Handbook for Surveyors', which was found while clearing out an office that had been used by a firm of surveyors since 1840. The Handbook has continued to grow in size and content, with 424 pages making up this; the 25th edition.
