James Derbyshire - Associate

Office: LONDON

James Derbyshire joined Watts as an Associate in August 2003 to carry out general building surveying duties within the London office. James is a building surveyor who graduated from the University of Greenwich in 1998 and has since worked in professional private practice. He has considerable experience in a wide range of core building surveying activities, as well as expertise in dilapidations, landlord and tenant issues and contract administration.

James has successfully negotiated numerous dilapidations settlements for both landlords and tenants. He has also worked with tenants to administer refurbishment contracts in order to ensure compliance with lease obligations and, similarly, he has assisted landlords in the letting of properties. James' experience in dilapidations and contract administration extends the scope of his work in the commercial property sector, having experience of both warehouse and office accommodation throughout the country.

James is fluent in Dutch and German and has a good understanding of French. At present, he is involved in the European development of the business. Utilising his local knowledge and expertise, he coordinates due diligence surveys in Holland, Germany and Scandinavia for UK-based investors. Furthermore, he has assisted as technical translator during the course of these inspections when liaising with local vendors, agents and tenants.

James is also involved in Watts' graduate recruitment scheme, which involves visiting leading universities to give lectures on building surveying and providing advice to potential graduates.
