The stated aim of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 is to make it unlawful to discriminate against disabled persons in connection with employment, the provision of goods, facilities and services or the disposal or management of premises. The legal requirements of the Act affect the majority of existing commercial and public building occupiers.

The Service:

The successful resolution of access problems to a building will address the needs of people with a wide spectrum of disabilities. Service providers and designers need to be aware of the complex interaction between impairment and building use. A properly commissioned access appraisal or audit is essential in identifying and creating improved accessibility.

Watts provides a full appraisal, audit and consultancy service relating to access to buildings for disabled persons.

  • Appraisal - the provision of early advice in the life of a new building. Using designers plans and an understanding of a building s use and location, we can assess ease of access and circulation issues throughout, in accordance with current Building Regulations, British Standards and best practice.
  • Audit an on-site assessment of existing buildings and their environs to identify potential problems and suggest solutions to improve access.
  • Consultancy ? a pragmatic approach to implementing a programme of access improvements with appropriate prioritisation of works and management systems..

Why Watts?

Watts is continually developing their experience in the access field. We have recently undertaken access commissions on behalf of a number of national retailers, government agencies, and other landlords and commercial occupiers.

Our experience with a wide range of property landlords, occupiers and managing agents enables us to develop our awareness of accessibility issues. This knowledge is matched by an increasing understanding of how disabled persons use and are prevented from using buildings.
